art fair preview #1

i know i said my next post would be the tutorial to make this dress, but i sort of get the feeling nobody’s really *clamoring* for it, so i’m deviating a bit from the plan here to catch you all up on what has totally taken over my life for the past few weeks.  i have long been dragging my feet on turning out art fair inventory, mostly because i am a total novice and unsure of what to even make!  many artists probably go into these things with existing inventory, or at least a clear idea of who they are and what they do.  i have none of these things.  there has thus been a lot of this in the past few months:

a month in review

my friends, what a fine month it was.  countertops cleared after one year of accumulating piles, cars cleaned and serviced, blades sharpened, walls painted, wardrobe multiplied, books read, faraway destinations traveled, old friends visited, new friends made.  a little business, a *lot* of pleasure.  a month long vacation is luxurious by any standard…i really vacillated over whether or not to write a roundup post at all because it makes me self conscious.  but, i really made it count, you guys…i don’t think a moment was wasted.  and i want you to know there was no sloth to be had.  the immediate and self-perceived dire needs of toddlers quickly erase any memory of relaxation, so join me in a walk down memory lane as i recall what it was like to have a month to do WHATEVER I WANTED. march purge

did i tell you guys i had a lot of projects planned?  see exhibit a, above.  march has been a busy month finishing up lingering projects (5, 6), whipping up some last minute ones (2, 4, 7), and just generally staying busy in the craft room.  i accumulated so much stuff over the past few weeks that i’ve decided to roll it all into one long post, because it was too hard to parse out categories vs. gifts without ruining surprises as they travel to their rightful recipients.  so, break out your decoder rings for a look at what i’ve been up to… Continue reading

today i thought i would share some snippets of what’s really been occupying my time and attention since christmas.  all these posts you’ve been reading?  they were carefully archived over the holidays so that i could continue posting as i worked slowly and methodically on executing a rather significant event that, in a night, has come and gone in a flash of friends, flowers, and flan. gift exchange

it’s DONE.  and i made it just in time.  you might notice the conspicuous absence of any gifts for children, namely my own children, which is precisely why everyone else’s gifts were completed on time.  given my kids don’t even yet understand what christmas is and they are royally spoiled by their grandparents, i knew they wouldn’t mind, or even notice.  so, you can expect to see a lot of kid clothes trickling onto the blog over the next few weeks as i slowly work through all the projects intended for this week.  in the meantime, check out the following tutorials and patterns that helped make this a handmade christmas! a simple wreath

wreathcollagebefore this project, my only experience with wreath making was as a young child, ambling around michigan wilderness with my dad cutting down dried grapevines.  that probably wasn’t legal, but such are the risks we take in the spirit of diy.  fortunately, that clever martha put out a version in her november 2012 issue of living that requires no breaking of laws or wielding of knives, and won’t die at the end of the season.  all you need is: Continue reading

family silhouettes

do you remember these from elementary school?  my mom still has mine from second grade, frizzy bangs and all (ah, the early 90s).  i have always thought these are pretty neat looking, but docile as my toddlers may be, there is no way they could sit still in one position for a full 2 minutes to trace their profile.  several months ago, i read this post about making silhouettes out of photos, brilliant!
